The most powerful production car ever to storm out of the factory gates, the Mercedes SL55 AMG was launched in 2002 and remained in production until 2008 when it was replaced by the even more bonkers SL63.

While it was the immense 500bhp power output that grabbed all the headlines, the really astounding figure was the torque generated by the supercharged V8. With 520lb/ft available at just 2,650rpm, the SL55 could literally melt its tyres away from the lights and needed all manner of sophisticated electronic aids just to keep it on the road.

“The engine is amazing,” said AutoExpress. “Even at idle, it reverberates through your ears and makes the ground tremble. Crack the throttle open and the full-blooded roar is nothing short of phenomenal. However, it takes a while to notice the sound – to begin with, you\'re too busy concentrating on the speed. Despite weighing the best part of two tons, AMG\'s flagship will pass 60mph in 4.5 seconds. By that stage, though, it\'s only just getting into its stride. With the standard car\'s 155mph limiter removed, Mercedes claims 180mph is easily achievable, and an AMG engineer has admitted to us that an otherwise unmodified SL55 has already achieved over 205mph in testing.”

Costing £89,000 at launch before any options were added, ownership was always going to be restricted to a privileged few and only around 1,500 were sold in the UK, so seeing one on the road today is always quite an event and makes it a sure-fire classic of the future.

The vendor understands that this 2003 model was purchased through the Mercedes-Benz factory delivery scheme. A correct UK spec car, it comes with its original receipt for EU142,000 (c.£117,000). Ordered in Obsidian black with Graphite leather, it was the keyless ignition, Disctronic collision radar, sat nav, Nokia phone, Linguatronic, Xenon lights, and a TV that boosted its price way above the already eye-watering basic.

Collected by a gentleman who spent much of his time with the car in Italy, its five service stamps show that Milton Keynes Mercedes looked after it initially, with services at 10,476 miles and 21,394 miles. Its next service was at 32,203 miles in 2007, the service work transferring to Mercedes-Benz Worcester in 2008 when the odometer showed 45,285 miles. Its last service at 60,720 miles was undertaken by local marque specialist Gerry Doverman and it had new tyres fitted last year which have covered around 3,500 miles. The total on the odometer is now 71,265 miles.

The vendor, its second owner, has owned it since 2008. He was told when he collected it from service that the computer had flagged up that it was ‘unrestricted’, although he has never been brave enough to find out if this really is the case!

Well cared for and with everything functioning as it should, this fabulous supercar is available for the same price of a dull family saloon. Its excellent service history, superb engineering and low overall mileage make the choice between the two a no-brainer.

Please note that the registration number shown in the photographs is not included and will be replaced with an age-related number prior to the sale.

CATALOGUE AMENDMENT: Please note that the cataogue incorrectly states the mileage as 64,200 miles. The car has covered just under 72,000 miles as in the description above.
