The 5 Series was so called because it was the fifth series of new car since the BMW V8 and bubble car era and was the first BMW to use the now common nomenclature – using the series followed by the engine size.
This version of the 5 Series was coded E28 and was styled by Marcello Gandini, who was also responsible for the similar looking Fiat 132 and Alfa Romeo Alfetta (not to mention the Lamborghini Miura). It was in production from 1982 until 1988. The highly successful 5 Series range accounted for over 50% of BMW’s profits for the period and was widely regarded as the finest sporting saloon of its era.
This 1987 car has the superb 3.5-litre straight-six that produced between 182 and 218bhp depending on the compression ratio. Said to be a very original example, it has covered 101,500 miles which the vendor understands to be correct. It was owned by its last owner for nearly 17 years and is MOTd until December 2014. The current owner has just fitted a new radiator and given it an oil and filter change, making this range topping 535i automatic ready to use and enjoy.
