The remarkable VW Beetle is famous for many reasons, its roots in Nazi Germany, the duration of its production, the vast numbers of cars produced and even its ability to climb up the outside of sky-scrapers as “Herbie”. Every one has its own story which is no doubt one of the appeals of this enchanting machine.

In 1971 VW introduced a new model called the 1302. ‘Dubbed’ the Super Beetle if you will excuse the pun, it had a redesigned front end which accommodated MacPherson Struts instead of the traditional torsion bar suspension which effectively doubled the boot space under its new nose. This was to be the start of a series of constant developements to the Beetle range made in an effort to keep the old-fashioned design current in the market.

Made for just two years, the 1302 is comparatively rare and being tax exempt attracts a strong following amongst Beetle affionados.

When purchased by the vendor in 2005, this sound 1971 example had already been made into a convertible, a popular modification made possible thanks to the Beetle’s massively strong floorpan. Since acquisition it has hardly been used, having covered just 1,000 miles since 2008.

Anxious to keep the car up to scratch, in 2012 the vendor asked Maltby Service Station near Rotherham to give it a rear brake overhaul and just last year they fitted a new carburettor, clutch, flywheel and rear crank oil seal. The history file includes a workshop manual and a current MOT which expires in April 2015.  All we need now is a summer like last year in which to enjoy it!

CATALOGUE AMENDMENT: Please note the MOT expires in May 2015 and not April 2015 as previously stated.
