Launched in 1970 to an unsuspecting world, the Range Rover created its own market niche. With a production run lasting until 1996, the Range Rover went through several iterations, starting with the basic two door, then four door, Vogue, CSK, LSE, ending up as the Range Rover Classic.

Despite becoming ever more plush with every iteration this automotive icon was recognised as the ‘best 4x4 by far’ and was equally at home being driven across farmland as it was parked outside an up market city residence.

Finished in one of the more desirable colour combinations of Beluga Black with grey leather upholstery, the example on offer is one of the later ‘soft-dash’ models (so called as they used a similar dash as the contemporary Discovery with two airbags). The soft-dash models have become quite sought after, second only to the original 2-door models which have risen sharply in value of late.

The seller of this Range Rover describes it as a good, usable, example that could be enjoyed on a regular basis and drives really well. In its twenty years, the car has travelled some 105,000 miles and the car still feels mechanically very fit. The engine pulls strongly; the gearbox works perfectly (as do the high/low ranges) with no whines from the differentials.

The original paintwork is very presentable and the Range Rover still sports its Brooklands bodykit (moulded front and rear bumpers with sill mouldings) fitted by the original supplying agent, HR Owen. Both upper and lower tailgates are solid. The interior is equally tidy with no tears to the leather seats and the headlining was replaced earlier this year to remove the ‘Bedouin tent’ look. Being a Vogue SE this Range Rover came with all the extras: tinted glass, electric seats, sunroof, windows and mirrors, cruise control, air conditioning, automatic dipping mirror, alloy wheels, etc. A removable dog-guard is also fitted, along with a substantial tow hook.

Originally this Range Rover was fitted with air-suspension, which is great when it works. However, there were a great many teething troubles (air leaks, ride height sensors, compressor issues, etc.) which gave a reputation for unreliability. Some time ago therefore, this example was converted to the far more reliable, original coil-spring arrangement. This provides just as much comfort as air-suspension but is far simpler to maintain.

MOTd to February 2015 (with works correctly done to address any issues), the car comes complete with owner’s manual and 16 MoT certificates verifying the current mileage. With values of all Range Rovers rising steadily this attractive black example looks excellent value at the guide price suggested.
