“Forget Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Lamborghini and Porsche. The most desirable car you can buy is the new Mercedes 500SL.

Wherever you happen to be, no other car impresses most of the people most of the time. It's the one car the world over that says you've arrived before you even start your journey. So what’s it like to drive? Fantastic, obviously. A five-litre V8. Three hundred and six brake horsepower. A silky but overrideable five-speed automatic transmission. And probably more technology than a Space Shuttle.”

Introduced in 2002, the R230 version of the SL500 certainly impressed the road testers on the Honest John website. The best-looking SL since the legendary Gullwing of the 1950s, great to drive and costing over £70,000 new, it is a sure-fire classic of the future.

First registered in May 2004, this particular SL500 has had just three owners from new and has only covered some 37,700 miles with a full service history and was last serviced around 2,500 miles ago. Silver with a grey leather interior, it is said to be in excellent condition all round.

Fitted with the expensive but deeply desirable Panoramic smoked glass roof option, the car has all the other luxuries you would expect including keyless go, heated electric seats, parking sensors and the brilliant Mercedes Command system (although you may need a degree in computing to make full use of this!). MOTd until December and taxed until October, this magnificent machine is ready for a lucky fourth owner to enjoy right away and looks ridiculously good value at the guide price suggested.

Don’t take our word for it: as Quentin Willson wrote of the R230 in the Mirror recently: “The fact that this is a car you could own for free makes it even more exciting. Buy it at the current insane book value and then next year you should be able to sell it easily for what you paid – as the market wakes up to the absurdity of how cheap these SLs have become.”

Please note that the private plate shown is not included and will be replaced with the age-related number MB04 GKJ prior to the sale.
