The modern three-box Ford Popular 100E was available alongside the pre-war styled ‘sit up and beg’ 103E model.

One step up from the basic ladder-framed design, the 100E had a monocoque bodyshell, coil springs and hydraulic brakes. In production from 1959 until 1962, its strengthened 1,172cc side valve ‘10hp’ engine gave 36bhp, sufficient for a top whack of 70mph, whilst 50mph took 20 seconds to reach from a standstill.

Probably of more importance to the general public was an average of 33mpg and while service intervals were still every 1,000 miles, the number of grease nipples had been reduced by half. Well over 100,000 were sold making it a very common sight on the roads of Britain in the period.

First registered in July 1960, this particular car looks most attractive in Lichen Green and was ordered to De Luxe specification which added chrome side strips and, most importantly, a heater! Remarkably it has had just three owners from new, the first owner keeping it right up until 2011.

Recently treated to a glass-out repaint, it has also been fully serviced and fitted with five new tyres, a stainless steel exhaust and a new cover for the driver’s seat. Said to run and drive well it is MOTd until August 2014.

It comes with a large history file including the original sales invoice from Ford at Dagenham, a detailed hand-written maintenance log, many invoices and old MOTs, an original handbook and a workshop manual.
