Launched in 1998, the 996 featured the most significant changes to the iconic Porsche 911 since it had been launched way back in 1963.

For the first time ever it had a water-cooled engine to meet more stringent environmental concerns, noise regulations and higher owner expectations regarding refinement. It was available with two basic engines, a 296bhp 3.4-litre and a 320bhp 3.6-litre, driving through either a six-speed manual or a Tiptronic semi-automatic gearbox.

All versions were blistering fast and capable cars, the 3.6 covering the 0-60 dash in just 5.2 seconds on the way to a top speed of 178mph with up to 25mpg economy. Build quality was exemplary (once some niggles with the early 3.4 engines were sorted) and the handling was sensational with all the legendary tactility and feedback that has always made the 911 a favourite amongst really enthusiastic drivers.

This particular Carrera 2 has the more powerful 3.6-litre engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Being a Targa model, it has a fabulous smoked glass roof which retracts at the touch of a button. Presented in unmarked Arctic Silver with a full black leather interior, it has covered just 69,300 miles in the hands of four owners and comes with a full service history, being last serviced at Porsche Cardiff less than 4,500 miles ago.

Equipment includes PCM (Porsche sat nav system), PSM (Porsche traction control), 18" Carrera alloy wheels with four recently replaced tyres, climate control and Porsche computer system. The glass roof also has an electric sunblind. Taxed and MOTd until September, it comes with all its original handbooks, two sets of keys and needs nothing more than a lucky new owner behind the wheel.

Clearly a much-cherished example, it is said to be “virtually unblemished” throughout and to drive beautifully. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to have this to play with on a summer Sunday morning?
