The flagship model of the Lincoln range, the Continental was launched way back in 1939 and remained in production until 2002, going through 10 generations of development along the way.

Packed with luxuries and imposingly massive, it was favoured by tycoons, bigwigs and filmstars keen to make an impression – John F Kennedy was infamously assassinated in the Presidential Continental Convertible in 1963 and TV detective Frank Cannon was always at the wheel of a silver Continental MkIII.

The MkV version, as here, ran from 1970 to 1979 and featured distinctive covered headlamps and dramatic blade-like wings that overshot front and rear and housed the sidelights in v-shaped pods. It also ditched the rear leaf springs of the preceding model in favour of more sophisticated coil springs. Power seats and power brakes came as standard, with discs on all four wheels available as an option from 1975 onwards. Initially available with either a 460ci or 400ci V8 (7.5 or 6.6-litre), the 460 was dropped in 1978.

Imported to the UK in 2009, this 1979 Lincoln Continental MkV Bill Blass Designer Edition Two-Door Hardtop Coupe comes in a special Midnight Blue Moondust Metallic over White paint finish with a faux-convertible Light Champagne Canvas Carriage Roof and a White leather interior with Midnight Blue accent straps and piping (try saying that lot after a couple of pints!). Bill Blass was a famous American fashion designer, incidentally, if you can imagine such a thing...

The car has been in the current ownership for the last four years during which time it has only covered some 2,000 miles bringing the total recorded mileage to around 53,000. Said to be in very good condition inside and out, it is also declared mechanically fit with no known faults, a good set of tyres, and is due to have a fresh MOT before the sale.

Always garaged and well looked after in the current ownership, it looks like a huge amount of metal for the money and could no doubt earn a decent living as a wedding or prom hire car. At 233 inches long and 80 inches wide, it is a big car even by American standards so make sure it will fit in your garage before you stick your hand up!
