Standing for ‘Renn Sport’ (‘Racing Sport’), the RS models are the ultra-high performance ‘halo’ cars in the Audi range and are made by an Audi subsidiary called ‘quattro GmBH’ – much like the M Division at BMW and AMG at Mercedes.

Top of the RS tree was the RS6 which was launched in C5 form in June 2002 and remained in production until September 2004. Available in saloon and estate versions it was powered by a 4.2-litre twin turbo V8 that produced 444bhp and 428lb/ft of torque – sufficient for a 0-60 time of just 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 170mph (even though it was theoretically limited to 155mph).

Coming with 4-wheel drive as standard, it was packed full of sophisticated driver aids including a ‘fuzzy logic’ semi-automatic gearbox which learned the style of the driver and could also detect whether it was going up or downhill. The adaptive suspension automatically reacted to acceleration, braking and cornering to counteract rolling and pitching yet delivered a comfortable ride in normal motoring. The braking system was just as clever, automatically distributing retardation to whichever wheel required it most, with enormous 8-pot callipers up front.

First registered in November 2004, this RS6 Avant is one of the last C5 cars made and has had just four owners from new. It has covered some 117,600 miles with an excellent Audi service history comprising 14 stamps to date, the last at 109,700 miles in January last year. New discs and pads were also fitted at 112,000 miles with a thick file of invoices charting other routine maintenance.

Finished in Mugello Blue with a black leather interior piped in white, it also has carbon fibre trim, alcantara headlining, Bose sound system, sat nav, Bluetooth, Anthracite alloys, black optics, black exhaust tips plus many other luxuries and sporting touches. Said to be in exceptional condition for the year and mileage, it is also said to drive superbly with “ballistic” performance. With six months' tax and MOTd until September 2014, this brutally quick estate is ready for immediate use and is quite possibly all the car you will ever need.
