Triumph started their Bonneville range late in 1958 for the 1959 season with a sporty twin carburettor version of their 650cc pre-unit twin.
This became the unit construction Bonneville in 1962 and continued in this guise until the late 60s when the frame underwent a re-design to carry the oil in it's frame tubing.
The T140 was developed from the 1960s unit construction 650cc Bonneville and gained an increase in engine capacity, initially to 724cc and soon after to 744cc.
This second generation Bonneville was made in several versions including special editions between 1972 and 1983 when the firm was declared bankrupt. This was not the end of the Triumph name and the bikes were produced under license agreement by Les Harris between 1985 and 1988 from his Newton Abbott factory. Subsequently the manufacturing rights were secured by John Bloor and a modern re-designed Bonneville is still available from his Hinckley factory.
The matching engine and frame number model offered here was first registered on 17/8/78 and the low mileage recorded is said by the vendor to be genuine. The V5C is accompanied with an MOT issued in 2010 showing just 3006 miles along with some previous bills and a purchase receipt issued in 1981. Also included are copies of Triumph Owners’ Club magazines, a Haynes manual and a guarantee card. Due to the vendor’s health problems this machine has not been used since 2011 and a certain amount of recommissioning and checking over prior to use is recommended.
