The Series II Land Rover arrived in 1958 and was a vast improvement over its predecessor.

Stretched by two inches, its wheelbase was now 88”, the extra length added directly to the load area. It was the first Land Rover to have been through Rover’s styling department, not that many of its customers worried too much about that, but its more modern shape cleverly accounted for the vehicle’s wider track, while managing to retain the much loved, rugged appearance of the earlier vehicle.

Engine size went up to 2 ¼-litres, making the Series II much livelier on the road, with little effect on fuel consumption and perhaps best of all, the wayward steering of the Series I was changed to a vastly superior setup, as anyone who has driven both types will confirm.

This 1959 example started life in the Military. Unfortunately, the file showing its early history has been lost, its current owner of five years confirming that he is its sixth owner over the last 55 years. A local Land Rover nut, he has only covered 300 miles since he bought it and is only selling it because he has too many projects and not enough storage - a problem familiar to many Brightwells customers!

He confirms that he has spent around £2,000 on chassis and bulkhead repairs plus a replacement differential over his period of ownership and that it is fitted with free-wheeling hubs.

At some point it appears to have been updated with a later 2 ½-litre petrol engine from an early Land Rover ‘90’. Sitting on larger tyres on LWB rims, the vendor reports that it certainly goes along very well with the original rims being included in the sale. It is taxed until June 2015 and MOT exempt.

Values for Series II Land-Rovers have not yet reached those being commanded for a late Series I, so this looks an affordable way to go classic motoring with the top off / windscreen down in the summer, and flood fording, go-anywhere performance in the winter.
