John Marston, manufacturer of the finest enamelled goods, bicycles and cars, launched his first motorcycle to the public in 1912.

This was a 350cc side valve single and his motorcycles went on to be notable for their excellent construction and exemplary finish, the outstanding quality of the enamelling playing a not insignificant role.

Sunbeam’s larger capacity long-stroke side-valve engine appeared later and scored a debut win in the hands of Alec Bennett at the French Grand Prix. Such was its remarkable power that it remained in road-going production right up until the 1930s. There were two engine capacities, the 500cc being designated the Model 6 and the 600 version the Model 7.

Introduced for the 1932 season were Sunbeam’s own Webb pattern ‘dog leg’ forks where the right fork legs ‘dog legged’ around the brake drum, these replacing the earlier Druid design. Other notable features of the Sunbeam were interchangeable quickly detachable wheels and the cross-over gearbox with primary drive on one side and final drive on the other.

The Sunbeam 500cc Lion offered here dates from 1932 and was first owned by one CW Beard of Worcestershire. When he was killed in WW2, ownership transferred to a neighbour who kept it until 1989. It then had one further owner until 2010 when it was acquired by the vendor.

It is supplied with a fascinating history file from new which includes various bills from the 1930s from John Marston Ltd, Wolverhampton, and Wellworthy of Birmingham. An original owner’s handbook and spare parts price list is also present along with a green log book from 1964 and much other material. The original tool kit is also present, still in its original leather pouch.

Showing wonderful originality and patina, this well-maintained machine is in regular use and has a current MOT.

Catalogue amendment: Not MoT'd in time for sale (though not needed for this age of motorcycle).
