The first Triumph machine appeared in 1902 sporting a proprietary Minerva engine made in Belgium, but within a few years the former bicycle manufacturer felt sufficiently confident to be building and designing their own power units.

Seeing the publicity that could be gained from competition success, Triumph soon entered into racing, Jack Marshall winning the 1908 TT single cylinder class for Triumph which greatly increased the order book for machines prior to the First World War and established the firm’s reputation for reliability and quality.

It was these qualities that produced substantial orders for Triumph to supply machines to British and Allied forces in the build up to the forthcoming hostilities. The original 3 1/2hp model which first appeared in 1907 was superseded in 1914 by the more powerful 4hp model and it is one of these 1914 models offered here.

The accompanying V5C registration document shows a registration date of 2003 and a manufacture date of 1919, but both the frame and engine number are from 1914 and the bike is accompanied by a Triumph Club dating certificate confirming that it is indeed a 1914 model which makes it eligible for a number of pioneer events.

The vendor acquired the machine in 2003 when it was already in good running order but he has subtly improved it in various respects to make it a most reliable and usable machine (it is, for instance, fitted with a hub clutch which means it can be started while still on it’s stand). Well known on the old bike circuit, it is a veteran of many tours and events and is said to be a pleasure to ride. Supplied with a current MOT, this thoroughly sorted machine is ready for use on pioneer events.

Catalogue amendment: No dating certicate or MoT (though not needed) in the documents box. If they are found, we will pop them in the post to the buyer.
