A real stately home on wheels, the Mulsanne first appeared in 1980 and was a Bentley version of the new Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, being virtually identical apart from a different radiator treatment and a more sporting interior.

In 1982 a Turbo version joined the range with 50% more power, sports suspension, sports seats, a revised centre console and alloy wheels. This was followed in 1987 by the Mulsanne S, which shared all the sporting features of the Turbo model and, from 1989, gained quad round headlamps instead of twin rectangular ones but retained a normally aspirated version of the familiar 6,750cc V8 engine, now fitted with Bosch Jetronic fuel injection.

With height adjustable suspension and massive brake discs all round, it was plenty quick enough for most owners, gliding to 60mph in 10 seconds with a top speed of 129mph. Just 909 Mulsanne S models were produced (plus another 61 in stretched LWB form) before it was replaced by the very similar Brooklands in 1992.

This April 1990 example has been in the current Bentley Driver’s Club member ownership for seven years, being acquired in 2007 from another Bentley enthusiast who had owned it for 10 years and with just three other owners before that.

Looking suitably regal in dark blue metallic with a cream hide interior piped in blue, it has covered under 62,000 miles with nine service stamps to date. The vendor has maintained the car religiously, recently fitting new tyres, a new steering rack, new manifolds and overhauled gear selectors. A new Alpine radio/CD with Bluetooth facility has also been installed.

A regular at BDC events, it has successfully completed various long distance runs in the current ownership, including trips to Monaco, Wales, Ireland and the Isle of Wight. Said to be in very good condition throughout and to have always proved most reliable, it comes with tax until May 2015, MOT until next April and is ready for a fortunate new owner to enjoy right away.
