BSA started the unit construction ball rolling in 1958 with the introduction of the BSA C15, a design leaning heavily on its sister company’s product, the Triumph Tiger Cub.
This design replaced the ageing C range of pre-unit (separate gearbox) machines that had been produced from just before WW2 and were now getting a bit long in the tooth. The iron-barrelled unit construction C15 range was replaced by an all-alloy unit in 1967 with the newly-framed BSA C25 Barracuda – although the new engine did have its shortcomings, not least a tendency to self-destruct when thrashed by the youth of the day!
In 1968 a revamped B25 was launched to rectify these problems, a milder compression ratio and a beefed-up con rod helping to tame the earlier bad habits. In 1970 the B25 was updated with the introduction of the B25SS, not only a stronger engine with separate oil filter and wider rear mounting points, but effectively a new model with a new oil-in-frame chassis, conical hubs with twin leading shoe front brake, new alloy front forks and restyled bodywork.
This was to be the last and best of the 250cc unit construction machines although, in true BSA fashion, they got it right at just the wrong time as the order books were almost empty...
The BSA B25SS offered here is a 1971 model that is said to be in excellent running order, but has been unused since it was last taxed and MOTd in 2011. The engine was rebuilt by BSA specialists OTJ engineering and their rebuild stamp is present on the crankcase below the engine number. This was done at a cost of £346 plus parts and all invoices are included along with sundry other invoices. Various old MOTs from 2006 to 2010 are also present plus a current V5C.
