Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982, using the 924 as a starting point but radically improving the car in many areas.

This included ditching the old VW engine and replacing it with a new 2.5-litre straight-four that was effectively half of the 5.0-litre V8 in the 928 supercar. Producing 163bhp and with bags of torque, it could propel the 944 to 137mph.

With its front engine, rear transaxle layout, the 944 was a fabulously well balanced machine that had the measure of the contemporary 911 in many respects. All the more surprising then, that the model is so humbly valued today.

This June 1982 944 Automatic has apparently been owned for the last 11 years by an RAF Pilot Officer but has been in storage for the last four years or more. Recently exhumed it has just been treated to a major recommissioning which included a full service, some new engine electronics and a repaint in the original Guards Red.

Riding on the correct, extremely light weight ‘Cookie Cutter’ alloys, it has a black leather interior and a highly appropriate 944 number plate. Although the car does apparently come with a certain amount of documentation, at the time of cataloguing this could not be readily located and the indicated mileage of c.57,000 cannot be warranted. Said to run and drive well, it comes with an MOT until August 2015 and is being sold here at no reserve.
