Although its engine might essentially have been that of the ‘A’, MG’s more rugged looking ‘B’ of 1962 showed an all-new body design in line with modern monocoque construction techniques.

First produced in roadster form, a coupe followed in 1965. The convertible was a strong seller right from the start, offering sporting looks, decent handling and respectable performance from its 95bhp, 110lb/ft four-cylinder engine. In ’65, the model gained a stronger five main bearing engine (up from three) and, in ’67, synchromesh on all four gears when ratios were also improved.

The rubber bumper model was introduced in 1974. Along with that now famous/infamous black moustache came an increased ride height, different carburettors (single Zenith) revised interior, and steel Rostyle wheels.

The late models have been rather looked down on in favour of earlier examples, but they do offer subtle advantages of their own. Those deformable bumpers protect the car better, the increased ride-height allows for easier access and the heavier weight makes for a smoother ride.

Should you prefer, the ride is easily lowered and, if you want more power, a plethora of upgrades are available. Indeed the later car’s body shell is based on the MBG V8, so should you want to go down the road of Rover V8 power with this or any other rubber bumper roadster, it’s an easy swap.

This particular 1978 example is however, very satisfying as it is. Presented in white with a maroon hood and black interior (with red carpets), the colour combination looks both striking and tasteful. A Mota-Lita steering wheel adds a nice touch. The MG also sports painted wire wheels in place of the original Rostyles and the hood has a zip-out rear window.

With 94,000 miles on the clock, the car reportedly drives well with ‘no issues’. It is also equipped with overdrive, which makes for more relaxed and economical touring. It comes with an extensive history file and is MOTd until May 2015.
