Launched in 1976 and remaining in production for 10 years, the Rover SD1 was the successor to the P6 range and featured much more modern styling by David Bache who envisioned it as a cut price Ferrari Daytona.

Engineering was by Spen King of Range Rover fame and it came with five different engine options ranging from a four-cylinder 2-litre unit to a 3.5-litre V8 with either manual or automatic transmission. The car was very warmly received by press and public alike, winning the European Car of The Year Award in 1977 and becoming a big favourite with the police.

This very well preserved example was purchased new in 1978 by Theodore Emms Ltd. They kept the car until 1995, passing it to a Mr Montague at a nearby address. A further three keepers show on the VOSA printout before the vendor acquired it in 2010, still in remarkably fresh condition and showing just 20,000 miles on the clock.

The vendor believes that this could well be the original mileage, especially given the condition of the car, but sadly there is insufficient paperwork to confirm this. An old MOT from 2008 shows that it has covered less than 400 miles since then, the car’s current ticket expiring in June 2015.

These fast, comfortable and handsome Rovers have real street presence and look terrific value at present. With interest in all things Seventies growing fast, this well preserved example could yet prove a shrewd investment at the modest guide price suggested.
