THIS CAR HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN.

“If one car sums up all that was good and bad about the British car industry, then it must be the Triumph Stag. Where it was good it was brilliant; and where it was bad it was terrible” – Honest John.

As the excellent Honest John website makes clear, the Michelotti-designed Stag was one of the most charismatic sports tourers ever produced on these shores but it was also bedevilled with typical 1970s build quality issues, particularly where the engine was concerned which was prone to catastrophic overheating.

Thankfully though, these issues have now all been overcome and most Stags that still survive are beautifully strong and refined machines with perhaps the most wonderfully woofly exhaust note of any British car – just start this one up and have a listen.

Sold between 1970 and 1978, the Stag was designed to be a gentleman's sports tourer to compete head-on with rivals like the Mercedes SL. A full four-seater, it was powered by an all-new Triumph-designed 2,997cc V8 engine that produced 145bhp, sufficient to propel the car to a heady 115mph. With independent suspension all round, front disc brakes, power steering and sophisticated road manners, it added up to a winning package that has long made it one of Britain’s best loved classic cars.

One of the last examples made, this lovely British Racing Green example has the desirable manual overdrive gearbox and has covered less than 42,000 miles from new with a very large number of old MOTs to prove. First registered in January 1978 it had two owners in quick succession before being acquired by a gentleman who was to keep it from 1979 until 2002 when the current lady owner acquired the car.

A Stag Owner’s Club member, she has continued to pamper the car these last dozen years, keeping it regularly maintained by her local garage (but sadly keeping no invoices) and having the wheels refurbished and four new tyres fitted just a handful of miles ago. It comes with a good amount of documentation including the original owner’s handbook and various books and technical papers relating to the model.

Appearing to be in remarkably good and original condition throughout, it is taxed until January, MOTd until next September and is ready to woofle off to a caring new home today.
