Faster, harder-edged and more driver-orientated than its W107 predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz W129-series SL caused a sensation when it was launched at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show.

Brimful of cutting-edge technology, its rigid two-door monocoque shell featured an integral roll over bar that deployed in less than a third of a second (if the car ever sensed an impending flip) and an electric soft top roof. Known for its sure-footed handling, the W129 featured all-round independent suspension, ABS brakes and power assisted steering.

Powered by a variety of six- and eight-cylinder engines, the flagship model was the mighty SL500 which marked the debut of Mercedes' four-valve-per-cylinder, dual-overhead V8 powerplant with variable valve timing. Its 4973cc V8 was credited with 326bhp and 332lbft of torque. Capable of over 150mph and 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds, it was nevertheless a paragon of refinement.

This 1995 SL500 was delivered to the first of its four owners through Alexandra Motors in Grimsby. The first six services were undertaken by Dick Lovett in Swindon, the car then being looked after by Mercedes-Benz of Swindon a further four times, the service book showing that it had covered 71,433 miles by 2006. A further four stamps to 2010 by R&B Vehicle Services (music fans by any chance?) and a Mercedes-Benz specialist complete the tally. By the time of its 14th service it had covered 94,500 miles

Purchased by the vendor shortly after, he has continued to care for the car, advising us that it has been used regularly and well looked after, the clock now showing some 104,500 miles. He adds that it goes well, has good tyres and comes with its original hard top for winter use. MOTd until September 2015 and taxed until the end of September 2014, it is ready to drive away today.

No-one has a bad word to say about these Panzers of the fast lane and we can’t help feeling that the current low values are due for a correction fairly soon.
