The first Mazda pickup saw the light of day in 1961 and was to be the start of a long-running dynasty of Mazda light-trucks which have grown in popularity ever since.

Initially only sold on the Japanese market, it wasn't until the appearance of the second generation model in 1965 that its US sales took off. The American market had developed a liking for smaller trucks, the Mazda B1500 being sold alongside a Japanese-produced Ford-badged version called the Courier.  This cost very nearly as much as a full-size Ford F150, but despite this sales were brisk. By 1971, the sturdy machine was making inroads into the UK market, the engine having grown to 1,600cc and producing 75bhp in European spec.

This pristine 1976 B1600 was rescued from a farmer’s barn and treated to a body-off restoration. The vendor, the owner of one of a select group of NFU Insurance-approved body shops, took pity on the truck and went to town on its renovation.

Everything was stripped down and prepared to a very high standard, but when reassembled has proven to be far too good for him to use as originally intended - hence it is reluctantly being offered here. It has had just two previous owners and has covered only 39,985 miles from new.

Fitted with four new tyres, it is MOTd until September 2015 and taxed until the end of this year. Rust-proofing wasn’t top of Mazda's agenda in period so you could wait a long time before you see another one for sale. Even if you were lucky enough to find one, it is most unlikely that it would be in the same fine condition as this one. With Japanese classics enjoying a marked surge in interest of late, it could yet prove a shrewd investment at the sensible guide price suggested.
