Italy’s answer to the Ford Capri, the Fiat 124 Coupe seemed just a little bit special by comparison.

Perhaps it was the sparking Lampredi-designed twin-cam engines, or the crisp styling, or maybe it was the gorgeous Veglia instruments that tipped the balance. Whatever it was, the 124 Coupe was a fine car, winning the hearts of the motoring press when it was unveiled in 1967.

Produced in three series, the last of the line, the ‘CC’ arrived in 1973, its engine having grown from 1,438cc to 1,756cc. The 118bhp was delivered with a suitably 'operatic' sound track, the five-speed box making the most of its enthusiastic power delivery. The body design was a masterpiece of restrained Italian elegance and was the work of Mario Boano, best known today for his amazing Ferrari GT250 ‘Boano’ coachwork. The rest was based as much as possible on the brilliant Fiat 124 saloon, which as we all know was a very good place to start.

Nearly 300,000 were to leave the factory, this example being one of the last, registered shortly after production ceased in late 1975. Purchased new by a Carmarthen-based petrol station owner, it has remained in his family since new.

Driven until the owner passed away, it was put into storage for around 20 years with only 26,000 miles on the clock. Even the spare tyre is original. Recommissioned in 2006, a further 4,500 miles were added to the total before it was put back into the garage just a year later, remaining there until recently.

The vendor advises us that the brakes have been rebuilt, the lights all work, it had a new battery in July and as far as he knows the car has never been welded (unusual for a Fiat of this era it must be said!). With a few jobs left on the list, including sorting out the wiper motor wiring, some retrim work and a respray, this rare, low mileage, late model 124 Sport looks like the ideal winter project.
