Launched in 1966 with Alfa’s wonderful twin-cam 1600cc engine, the Pininfarina-styled Giulia Sprint Spider was destined for greatness from the outset, its success being hastened when it shot to fame in the 1967 film ‘The Graduate’ starring Dustin Hoffman.

The original 'boat-tail' design of the Duetto was dropped in 1970 in favour of a more aerodynamically efficient Kamm tail which also greatly improved luggage space. The underpinnings were effectively the same as the superb Giulia saloon, so beloved of the Italian Carabinieri, comprising independent front suspension, coil-suspended live rear axle, servo-assisted disc brakes all round and the most communicative steering you could ever wish to experience.

More engines were added to the list of options, the most powerful being the torquey 132bhp 2-litre unit found in the Spider Veloce, giving it a top speed of 119mph and a 0-60mph time of less than 10 seconds. “It is difficult to put into words the sheer charm of this open sports Alfa Romeo,” wrote John Bolster in an Autocar road test. “It is the kind of car that even an experienced test driver will take out for the sheer fun of handling it… yet it is just as easy to drive as the most unexciting family hack.”

This particular right-hand drive Spider Veloce is a remarkable car that has covered only 46,750 miles from new and had just one owner for its first 38 years. Bought new by a Dr Walker from Alfa Romeo Edgware Road, London, it was used regularly until 1979 but then put into storage where it was to remain until acquired by its second owner in February 2010.

Still in exceptionally sound and original condition after its 30-year hibernation, the car needed no welding but was carefully recommissioned with various cosmetic and mechanical issues attended to as necessary. The third owner bought the car in December 2012 and continued to maintain it diligently, replacing various items including the timing chain, head gasket, clutch, servo, fuel pump, sender units, suspension bushes, master cylinders, various switches and all four tyres.

Fitted with twin Weber carbs, the car is said to drive superbly with all gauges working as they should and displaying good oil pressure and temperature. MOTd until November 2015 (with no advisories recorded), it comes with a substantial history file including many parts and repair invoices; correspondence from previous owners; original service booklet and owner’s manual; original colour showroom brochure and a spare set of keys.

A refreshing change from the usual Alfa red, it comes in its original paint colour of Dutch Blue with a Cerise Red interior and was recently fitted with a new black Mohair hood. As Alfa lovers will know, it is virtually impossible to find such sound and original examples and, although this one might benefit from some minor cosmetic attention here and there, the combination of low mileage, low ownership and impressive structural originality make it a rare find indeed.

AMENDMENT: The trim in this car is vinyl, not leather as previously stated. There is also some uncertainty surrounding the year of manufacture. A letter in the history file states that it is a 1972 model that was not registered until 1975 but we have been unable to substantiate this and the V5 records it as first registered in August 1975. Please assume, therefore, that it is a 1975 model.
