Initially renowned for making radial aircraft engines, the Parisian firm of Salmson entered the car industry by taking out a manufacturing licence for the GN cyclecar in 1919 but had progressed to making their own machines by 1921.

By 1932 the principal model was the S4, a small luxury saloon with a twin-cam four-cylinder engine, transverse independent front suspension, and either a 4-speed ZF gearbox or, at extra cost, a Cotal pre-selector ‘box. Engine size grew from 1465cc (placing it in the 8CV tax band), to 1596cc (10CV) and finally to 2312cc (13CV) in the S4 E model of 1937.

Remaining in production until 1951, the S4 E gained rack-and-pinion steering, independent torsion bar front suspension and Lockheed hydraulic brakes, road tests of the time universally admiring its fine steering, 80mph performance and class-leading road-holding.

Available in right-hand drive only, all were beautifully made and highly competent machines but a combination of punitive French taxation laws combined with post-war austerity proved too much for Salmson, as it did for many French car makers, and the firm folded in 1954 with only around 1,000 S4 E models sold in total.

The chassis number of this S4 E would place it towards the end of production c.1950. Being offered here from a deceased estate, it was reputedly imported from France by the late-owner about 15 years ago. A professional coachbuilder of some repute, he had embarked on a restoration with the intention of creating a ‘special’ and it appears that the chassis has been shortened. Being sold here strictly ‘as seen’ bidders are advised that it comes with no documentation.

AMENDMENT: Since the catalogue went to press we have been contacted by a Salmson aficionado in Germany who believes that this chassis dates from 1939. However, a previous owner of the car has called to say that it is a post-war model. Bidders are advised to do their own research as to its true identity.
