It was generally assumed that the Mini would cease production following the introduction of the more practical hatchback Metro in 1980, although the product planners at the factory had never looked at it this way.

In fact the venerable Mini was to outlive the new pretender by a full two years, soldiering on until 2000, supported by the Cooper models and a range of special editions which kept interest in the product alive. The Mayfair Edition was in production from 1982 until 1994 and featured luxuries such as a rev counter, servo-assisted front disc brakes, plastic wheelarch extensions and sill covers, opening rear side windows and plush velour seats.

These ‘added value’ extras made the humble Mini surprisingly comfortable and an optional 4-speed automatic was a popular choice as in truth they were better suited to nipping round town than making a trip to the Cote d’Azur.

This August 1986 Sea Mist Blue automatic has been owned by the same family since new. The 11,200 miles on the clock can therefore be warranted as correct, supported as they are by the original service book which contains 8 stamps. Its most recent service was undertaken just a few miles ago, shortly before the sale, and it is MOTd until September with no advisories recorded.

As one would expect of such a low mileage vehicle, it is said to drive beautifully and retains its original book-pack and spare spare set of keys. The owners had hoped to keep this much-loved car within the family but, when presented to the grand-daughter, she declared she couldn’t really get on with the automatic gearbox - which is why it is looking for a somewhat more appreciative new owner today.
