Launched to a dumb-founded motoring press in 1959, the Alec Issigonis-designed Morris Mini Minor introduced a whole new concept in car design.
Its space-saving front-wheel-drive layout and ingenius transverse engine allowed 80% of the area of the car's floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage and influenced a generation of car makers. Throw in a cute little monocoque body and go-kart like handling that made 30mph feel like 60mph and Issigonis was on to a winner.
The history of Syd the Mini dates back to 1997 when it was purchased by a bank manager for his three sons to use to learn to drive. At the time of purchase, it had just completed a total strip-down and restoration, its Kermit green paintwork being changed to red and a Union Flag being added to the roof. Photographs on file show the comprehensive nature of the restoration which was done to a high standard.
Following what must have been a string of driving-test successes, it was put into the family garage in 2001 where it has sat ever since. Recently exhumed and fired-up, it is due to have a fresh MOT by the time of the sale and would make the ideal first car or practical entry into the classic car scene.
