Recently voted Britain’s favourite classic car by the general public, the Michelotti-styled Triumph Stag was designed to be a gentleman's sports tourer to compete head-on with rivals like the Mercedes SL.
Sold between 1970 and 1978, it was a full four-seater and was powered by an all-new Triumph-designed 2,997cc V8 engine that produced 145bhp, sufficient to propel the car to a heady 115mph. With independent suspension all round, front disc brakes, power steering and a Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic gearbox option, it had sophisticated road manners and the most wonderfully woofly exhaust note of any car made on this side of the Atlantic.
This 1972 tax exempt Stag was purchased by the owner 18 months ago. He has undertaken a programme of improvements that have resulted in a very well turned-out machine.
Bills on file show that prior to his purchase some £3,000 had been spent on the mechanics, including a new clutch, gearbox overhaul and new crank seals etc. It is unclear whether the car's conversion from an automatic to a manual (with overdrive) took place at this time or had been done previously.
The vendor’s job list included fitting a new brake master cylinder, reconditioned water pump, a larger capacity radiator as well as an electric fan. He reports that it runs and drives very nicely, adding that the soft top is in good condition and that the tyres are all good, the spare sitting on a matching alloy wheel.
MOTd until May 2015, it has been used regularly and is only being offered for sale because the vendor’s real interests lie in earlier machinery and he has unexpectedly got the opportunity to acquire a much older vehicle that he has been lusting after for some time. So please bid vigorously or he may remain frustrated!
