In October 1986, German uber-manufacturer Mercedes-Benz began work to develop a worthy successor to its highly successful small saloon, the wonderful 190 (W201 Series).

The new model was in testing by the end of the Eighties and finally, in October 1993, the new W202 C-Class was launched onto the market. With great build quality and sober good looks, it was marketed as a compact executive saloon (rather than simply another mid-sized four-door).

It typical MB tradition, it was offered in a plethora of trim options. The surprisingly (for Mercedes) well-appointed, entry-level model was badged ‘Classic’. The more trendy might go for the brighter colours and more youthful treatment of the similarly-priced ‘Esprit’. The most luxurious, with interior-accoutred pretentions that verged on S-Class territory, was the wood and chrome-trimmed ‘Elegance’. Between all these levels a huge array of optional extras allowed you to customise to your heart’s desire.

There were nearly as many engine options as there were trim choices: four-cylinder 1.8 or 2.2-litre petrol engines (the C180 and the C220) or a 2.5-litre diesel power (predictably the C250). A sport package was also available, offering more purposeful-looking trim, attractive alloy wheels and stiffer suspension. With 136bhp, the 1998cc C200 (as here) could get to 60mph in 11.6 seconds and reach a respectable top speed of 120mph.

Understated and elegant, the C-Class looked at ease in any surroundings and it saw service as everything from family saloon to ambulance to airport taxi. Its build reputation was second to none and, predictably from the great marque, it proved to be a reliable and comfortable long-distance, long-term workhorse. The estate cars are becoming something of a cult of their own, but the standard saloons are held in great affection by those who know their enduring qualities.

First registered in August 1995, this stunning top-spec C200 Elegance has covered only 15,500 miles in its 19 years to date in the hands of just four owners. Meticulously cared for, it has been garaged all its life and carries a good Mercedes and specialist service history with various maintenance bills, receipts and past MOT certificates to warrant the mileage.

Presented in a subtle shade of silver with a contrasting two tone beige cloth interior, it is fitted with electric sunroof, windows and mirrors. The centre console and dashboard feature walnut veneer, and the car is equipped with a high-quality stereo. Surely the finest example you could ever wish to find, your only dilemma will be whether to mothball it as a future investment, or just enjoy that new car feel and smell for the price of a clapped out family hatchback.
