Produced between 1976 and 2008, the Honda CG125 was hugely popular as a commuter bike, learner machine or the perfect mount for inner-city couriers.
The main reason for its success was its utter reliability. Built for third world markets, it was based on the delightful Honda OHC CB125, the engine on the ‘CG’ model being reverse-engineered with conventional push-rods to operate the valves. Throw in a fully-enclosed chain case and a washable air filter and its owners got a machine that was virtually indestructible.
After 1985, production moved to Brazil and they were never quite the same. These days, customers can buy horrid cheap Chinese copies, the reality being that under any circumstances, an older Honda-made machine is a far better bet.
Last used in 2009, this starter classic has covered 34,000 miles from new and will require recommissioning before use. Light in weight, economical and bullet-proof, it will appeal as much to the young learner as to the rider looking to deliver pizzas in their spare time. In which case, make mine a large one with extra pineapple please.
