Marketed as ‘a British car to beat the world’, early advertisements for the new Metro had it defending the white cliffs of Dover, tugging at the heart strings of the patriotic British car-buying public.

It was a genuinely good car though, with bags of space, super handling and a fine ride thanks to the Hydragas suspension. Within 10 years, the millionth Metro had rolled out of Longbridge, making it their fastest selling car to date.

This early first series Metro City X has only covered 26,000 miles since it was first sold in 1984. Mr C Sanders originally purchased the Opaline Green beauty for his wife, paying his local Harpenden Austin Rover dealer £3,811.48 for the privilege. Her name follows his in the log book from 1997, the car passing into the hands of the vendor in 2009. There are 13 old MOTs on file, the earliest from 1994, which chart the slow accumulation of mileage from 18,670 miles then to the aforementioned total today.

This effectively two-owner car has been part of a collection of British Leyland’s finest offerings from the ’70 and ‘80s and has not been used on the road since 2009 so will require some light recommissioning before use. It is worth noting that while there were over 105,000 City X models still registered in 1995, the total on the DVLA system today has now dropped to a mere 208!

With an attrition rate like this, there will soon be no survivors and this sound and solid low mileage car needs preserving for future generations to enjoy and is being offered here at no reserve. So don’t just sit there – remember those white cliffs: ‘England expects...’ and all that. Put on a good show chaps, and it could be you who saves her for the nation!
