When Porsche launched the 924 in November 1975, it marked a radical departure for the company: not only did it have a front engine, it was also cooled by water rather than air.

Initially Porsche fans were not entirely convinced but, once behind the wheel, few could really find anything to complain about. With its front engine, rear transaxle layout, the 924 was a fabulously well balanced machine that actually out-handled the rest of the Porsche range.

Power came from a 2-litre 125bhp four-cylinder engine allied to a five-speed gearbox, making the car good for a 10 seconds 0-60 dash on its way to a top speed of 125mph. Costing around two-thirds the price of a 911, the 924 was a huge success for Porsche and remained in production until 1988, effectively saving the company at what was a difficult time in its history and also acting as inspiration for the suspiciously similar Mazda RX7…

First registered in January 1984, this particular 924 has had virtually one owner from new, the current registered keeper acquiring it when it was just 19 months old. Clearly a much cherished machine, it has always been kept garaged and mainly used in fine weather only.

With only around 88,000 miles on the clock, it comes with a large history file to show regular maintenance, including a well stamped up service book to around 78,000 miles with many supporting invoices. All the original handbooks are still present in the original Porsche wallet.

Presented in red with a half-leather black interior, it is said to run and drive well with an MOT until May 2015. Very little used these last couple of years, it now only needs a proud third owner who can cherish it in the manner to which it has become accustomed.

With fewer than 600 standard 924 manual models still taxed and on the road according to DVLA figures, it could well prove a shrewd buy at the modest guide price suggested.
