A masterpiece of industrial design, the 1974 VW Golf revolutionised the small car market and established a reputation on which VW have traded to this day.

At a time when BL was turning out stodgy shockers like the Morris Ital and Marina, here was a car of such precision and quality that it forced every other rival to raise their game or give up. Crisp, glassy and clean, it oozed a good taste and intelligence that made the Habitat generation go weak at the knees.

In Britain the Golf was especially popular and became the must-have accessory of the infamous ‘Yuppie’ of the 1980s thanks to one of the most famous car commercials ever made. This featured the model Paula Hamilton, cunningly made up to look like Diana, Princess of Wales. She is seen leaving her husband, posting her wedding ring back through the letterbox, throwing the house keys at the cat, ditching her mink coat and pearl necklace - but keeping the car keys. "If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen" ran the punch line.

In 1979 a convertible version was launched, developed and produced by Karmann, who specialised in low volume production. As it was built outside of the regular production system, the Golf Cabriolet never received the more flabby styling given to the Golf Mk2 from 1983 onwards. It retained the chiselled good looks of the Mk1 all the way through its production life, selling alongside its updated sibling until 1992.

Dating from February 1985, this particular Cabriolet has been in storage for the last couple of years and may benefit from some recommissioning before use. Said to start, run and drive, it is described as being in fair condition throughout and comes with a V5 and sundry invoices for past maintenance.

Looking sharp in grey metallic with a black hood and the correct alloy wheels, this 80s icon can be spoodled up over the winter and should be back on song when the good weather comes round once again.
