The BSA Lightning was developed from the touring A65T Thunderbolt for the American market as a twin carburettor model offering a more sporting ride.
As well as the performance upgrade, steps were taken to make it more reliable and less prone to lose its oil. As time progressed the engine gradually improved and by the end of the model’s life was a lot more reliable and leak-free, but the chassis was sadly dated compared with the latest offerings from the Japanese competition.
This 1972 machine was purchased by the vendor from a friend who had acquired it some years previously from an elderly gentleman who could no longer ride. He was told that the previous owner had stripped and rebuilt the engine and had undertaken some general restoration work on the bike, although it is unclear exactly what was done and it has been some years since it has been in regular use.
Now back in running condition and with good compression, the vendor intends to give it a fresh MOT in time for the sale.
