The Morgan 3-wheeler Sports can be distinguished from the more focused Super Sports model by its slightly larger body and handy doors.

The chassis was very similar, extended by 4” giving enough room for a cubby space behind the seat, the car being intended more for fast touring than as the ultimate high performance car. In 1933 there were major changes at the factory, the three-speed & reverse gearbox making its entrance and the Matchless range of engines gradually replacing the JAP supplied units. By the time this car left the works in 1935, the vast majority used the super smooth Matchless motors as fitted to this air-cooled example.

According to Morgan factory records, chassis number D1482, a Morgan Sports Two-Seater, was despatched from the works on 24th July 1935 to Huxhams Ltd, the Morgan dealer at Penn Hill Garage, Parkstone, Bournemouth. The car was originally painted black and green and was fitted with the same Matchless MX2 overhead valve, air-cooled engine, serial number MX2/639, that is fitted today. The Burman gearbox was number 1974 and the body was number 2806.

This car was also fitted with a ‘foot throttle’ (most had a hand throttle) and a ‘19-tooth sprocket’. The car retains its correct St Christopher badge which bears the car’s chassis number as well as the original plate from the supplying dealer.

Purchased in 1983 from a gentleman in Liskeard, Cornwall, it was successfully driven home to the vendor’s house in Cardiff. Used sporadically, it has remained off the road since 1997 and will now require some recommissioning before use.

The vendor advises us that it comes with two new exhausts supplied by the 3-Wheeler Club which have never been fitted, two new oversized pistons and a small quantity of spare parts. The left ‘pot’ is reported to be a bit smoky (hence the new pistons) so the engine will need a precautionary strip and rebore before it can be used in anger.

We are delighted to have so many Morgan 3-wheelers in the sale today: they’re a bit like buses, you wait ages for one to come and then all of a sudden four arrive in one go – now that’s just too much temptation!
