Launched at the 1989 Geneva Motorshow, the W129 series Mercedes-Benz were far more sporting than the outgoing W107 series and incorporated a whole range of new technology. The fully automatic convertible roof, sophisticated multi-link suspension, ABS and pop-up roll bar were all major strides forward 26 years ago.

At the top of the range sat the 500SL which was used to debut MB’s new 4 valve per cylinder technology. Coupled with twin overhead camshafts and variable valve timing, these 4973cc engines were good for 326bhp and a stump-pulling 332lbft of torque. Over 150mph was within easy reach and 60mph came up in just 6.3 seconds from standstill. The car was as fast as it was refined.

This much loved example was originally supplied through County Services in Haverfordwest in 1991. Purchased through ourselves in 2011, it was principally used by the owner’s late husband for his annual pilgrimage to watch the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

Well maintained throughout, the service book shows no fewer than 13 stamps, the last being undertaken in December 2012 at 87,305 miles. Bills on file show that in March 2012, local Mercedes-Benz specialist Gerry Doverman organised a new remote key and sound insulation pad under the bonnet which amounted to £614. In June 2012 it had a set of five new tyres costing £760 and at much the same time the a/c was overhauled adding a further £564 to the total spend. New brake pads were ftted just a month later.

As can be seen, care and maintenance was a top priority, however the owner sadly passed away shortly after this work had been carried out and the car has remained largely unused, stored away in a dry garage ever since.

Complete with hard top, this super looking Astral Silver 500SL, with its contrasting black leather upholstery, is due to have a fresh MOT by the time of the sale and looks extraordinary value at the suggested guide price, especially given all the attention lavished on it so few miles ago.

AMENDMENT - The MoT actually expires in November 2015.
