Once a common sight in any farming county, the Fordson Power Major was the backbone of British farming in the post war years.

Offering rugged, versatile and economical power from the ploughed field to the saw bench, the Fordson Power Major was a great success for the Ford Motor Company, pouring out of the Dagenham works at up to 300 tractors per day.

Supplied new in 1959 by the Ross dealership in the Herefordshire market town of Bromyard, TCJ 562 was first owned by a Mr J Darby of Collington. The tractor worked for what is believed to be about 6,000 hours until 2005 when it was bought by the vendor, a neighbour to Mr Darby, who had known the tractor for many years.

He proceeded to restore it with the help of his Jaguar mechanic, fitting new liners during the engine rebuild, also repairing the wear and tear to the bodywork which then received a thorough repaint bringing the tractor up to its current condition. The Simms fuel pump has been rebuilt by Malvern diesels and a new large battery has been fitted as preparation for the sale of the tractor.

A new clock was fitted on completion of the rebuild and this shows that in the last ten years the tractor has only completed a further 58 hours of running. The tractor started easily and ran crisply during the photo session, but the vendor advises that the brakes should be adjusted after a period of inactivity gathering dust which is the reason it is now offered for sale.

A fine example of a vintage Fordson that, after its initial trip from Dagenham to Herefordshire, has not wandered out of the county and has rarely left the local parish.
