Volkswagen had a daunting task on their hands coming up with a replacement for the Beetle. How do you replace what was at that time the best-selling car of all time?

The solution in the end was simple. In 1974 they announced the Golf, a sharply styled, simple and beautifully engineered hatchback that followed the latest in front-drive thinking. Throw in a hot GTi version, the first of its genre, and Volkswagen had a car with all the credibility it could ever need, guaranteeing its place in motoring’s hall of fame.

Now in its seventh iteration, it surpassed the Beetle’s mere 21.5 million production run some years ago, with 31 million now well within its sights and showing no signs of slowing down.

In common with most of us middle-aged types, the Golf put on bulk as the years rolled by. The 3rd generation, as offered here, had grown considerably from the lithe MkI but it proved sufficiently popular with the European Car of the Year judges to be awarded 1st place in their 1992 rankings.

Remaining in the same family from new, this smart 1.4L 5-door hatchback 5-speed manual Golf has accumulated just 43,323 miles since first leaving the showroom. Supplied by CD Bramalls of Cheltenham in August 1995, it has revisited their premises no fewer than 17 times for servicing, a fact confirmed by its comprehensively stamped service book (which also shows that it had a speedo change at 1,716 miles so the clock now reads 41,607 miles).

It retains its original sales brochure, rear window sticker, dealer number plates, key fob and tax disc holder and is MOTd until August 2015.

This smart, comprehensively serviced Golf has wanted for nothing during its pampered existence.
