Faster, harder-edged and more driver-orientated than its W107 predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz W129-series SL was launched at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show.

Brim full of cutting-edge technology, its impressively rigid two-door monocoque shell featured an integral roll over bar that deployed in less than a third of a second (if the car sensed an impending flip) and a fully automatic convertible roof. Known for its sure-footed handling, the W129 featured all-round independent suspension, ABS brakes and power assisted steering.

Traditionally the most sporting model of the MB line-up, the SL was the preserve of the rich and famous when new – no episode of Dallas was complete without at least one cruising by and many F1 drivers used them as day-to-day cars in the early nineties.

From the poetic motion of the electric hood to the automatic roll bar, the cars oozed sophistication with adaptive suspension, airbags, traction control, air con and a superb new five-link rear suspension all as standard.

This 300SL-24 has the 24-valve version of the standard 3-litre straight-six engine, developing a creamy smooth 231bhp (up 40bhp on its 12-valve sibling). First registered in September 1992 it is MOT tested until June 25th 2015. It currently shows a mileage recorded at 54,174 miles though this is unwarranted. For the last five years it has remained unused but kept roadworthy with an annual MOT test.

The Mercedes comes to us today from a deceased estate. We are due to receive a comprehensive sheaf of paperwork regarding the history of the car on February 28th 2015, after the Estate Solicitors have released it from probate (please refer to the Brightwells website for updates).

This Mercedes was collected from storage in Altrinchham and driven some 40 miles to be prepared for sale in Market Drayton. Anecdotally the driver mentioned how well it drove.
