With its massively wide rear haunches, Coke-bottle hips and oval exhausts, the 993 is considered by many to be the best looking 911 of all.

Launched in 1993 and remaining in production until 1998, it was the last Porsche to feature an air-cooled engine and the last to retain the classic 911 silhouette – giving it a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts. The good looks continued inside with a re-designed interior featuring new seats, better heating and ventilation and improved dashboard fabrics. For the first time, airbags were also fitted as standard.

More than just a pretty face, it was also the first 911 to handle safely on the limit thanks to its wider track and the adoption of an all-alloy multi-arm rear suspension attached to an all-alloy subframe. Lift off mid-bend and, instead of flying off backwards into the scenery as earlier 911s were wont to do, this car would just tuck in and hold the line.

Performance from the 272bhp 3.6-litre flat-six engine was suitably authoritative, crushing the 0-60 time in just 5.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 168mph. The new engine featured lavish use of exotic metals, such as magnesium for the fan housing, and a strengthened camshaft along with lighter pistons – it also sounded magnificent with a spine-tingling metallic bark.

A sophisticated Bosch ignition system was employed to keep the engine running as sweetly as its makers intended. Built like the proverbial brick outhouse, it was also utterly dependable and was one of the very few supercars that you could genuinely use every day.

Dating from April 1996, this 993 Carrera 2 Targa has only covered 73,400 miles from new with a comprehensive service history comprising 11 stamps to date (7 main dealer, 4 specialist) and was last serviced only 1,100 miles ago.

Looking stunning in Turquoise with a Marble Grey interior, it has the wonderful smoked glass Targa roof option which slides back at the touch of a button to make the most of those glorious summer days that lie ahead of us. It also has the semi-automatic Tiptronic gearbox that can be left in automatic mode for stop/start city driving but can be manually shifted for rapid cross-country progress using either the gearstick or the buttons on the steering wheel.

At the last major service at 70,902 miles in April 2012 it was also fitted with four new tyres, new front wishbones, exhaust heat shields and fresh brake fluid at a cost of some £3,170. More recently new back bumper stays have been fitted, a new air con condenser and all four wheels refurbished.

With only five former keepers and due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, the car is said to drive superbly and to be in good, totally original condition throughout. It comes with all its original handbooks in the original wallet, sundry invoices, nine old MOT certificates and two keys plus the plastic one.

Perhaps the best air-cooled 911 of all, the 993 is widely regarded as a blue chip investment and values are already climbing fast meaning that few are offered for sale. And of the 68,029 Porsche 993 models made in total, only 4,538 were Targas. This low-mileage corker looks like a no-brainer at the sensible guide price suggested, so bid vigorously today – or kick yourself for your hesitancy hereafter…
