Launched in 1984, the Mk1 Toyota MR2 took the automotive world by storm. No one suspected the Japanese car giant had been planning this mid-engine two-seater roadster and certainly no one had foreseen what a brilliant bit of kit it would be.

Lightweight and nimble with all the heavy bits located in the right places, the MR2 gave Ferrari handling at blue collar prices. A big success for Toyota, the Mk1 sold well until 1989 when the Mk2 was introduced. The 1990’s sports car buyer demanded more space, more comfort and more safety features, and as such Toyota again got it right with the Mk2. But we all know that ‘nothing comes for free’ and the downside of all these improvements was that this once nimble, light and surefooted roadster put on 'a bit of weight’ and ‘a bit of shape’.

But in 1999 the old magic was recaptured with the release of a new third generation model, the MR2 going back to its lightweight responsive small car roots while also becoming a spyder. Fitted with an all-new 1.8-litre 140bhp Variable Valve Timing (VVT) engine, 0-60 arrived in 7.9 seconds and it ran out of speed at 130mph. The lightest and most powerful normally aspirated MR2 so far, it weighed in at just over1,000kg. It was said that a decent driver in this latest MR2 could keep up with an average driver in a Mitsubishi EVO VI, high praise indeed.

Finished in black with a matching black leather interior, today’s car has had the benefit of some recent service work, plus an expensive replacement catalytic converter. Sitting well in the sunshine for the photo shoot, the hood operated easily and the car started eagerly. The vendor reports that it drives well and recently completed a long trip from Kent to Worcestershire cruising at the legal limit while using a minuscule amount of fuel. Having covered 106k miles it is supplied with an MOT until September 2015, it looks like a lot of summer fun for a very modest outlay.
