When the Toyota MR2 was launched in 1984, the world wasn't ready for just quite how good it was; no Japanese manufacturer had attempted to sell a mid-engined car before. Especially one that the working man could afford.

So named because it was a ‘Mid-engined Runabout 2-seater’, the standard MR2 came with the 1.6 16-valve engine first seen in the Corolla GT, which gave it brisk performance. With its dizzying 7,700rpm redline, the Cosworth BDA-inspired 129bhp four-cylinder motor was coupled to a sweet 5-speed box and could sprint to 60 in 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 120mph.

Weighing in at just 1,070kg it also had perfect weight distribution with ride and handling honed by Lotus, aided by legendary American race driver, Dan Gurney. The race car feel continued with a short-throw gearchange, razor-sharp throttle control and immediate, darting response to steering input.

The result was a blisteringly intense driving experience that would be instantly familiar to a Porsche 911 or Ferrari F355 driver – yet at a fraction of the price. With origami-inspired folded angular lines, it also looked great and was immensely strong with no fewer than five bulkheads between the different compartments. It was replaced by the much porkier Mk2 version in 1989

When new, the MR2 was always punted as a future classic and 25 years since the last ones were made they have just about reached that status now. We are seeing more and more entered into classic auctions, but this is the first T-bar that has come across the Brightwells block.

Dating from 1988 but first registered in July 1989, this MR2 has missed the attentions of modifiers and remains relatively original, being finished in an attractive shade of metallic blue with a good quality blue cloth interior. Mechanically it has had a recent replacement radiator, fresh leads and plugs and is due to have a fresh MOT before the sale. It is being offered here at no reserve so the highest bid takes it.
