Designed by Harley Davidson’s owner, Willie G Davidson, the XLCR was a belated response to the rise of the Japanese sportsbike. First launched in 1977, production only lasted for two years and a total of approximately 4,000 were built in that period.

The technical specification is as follows: air-cooled, four stroke, 45 v-twin engine, 997cc with 68hp; electric ignition; twin discs front and single rear; front telescopic forks and rear swinging fork. Top speed is 115mph with a ¼ mile standing start time of 13.2 secs.

This is an extract from a road test by respected journalist Roland Brown:
“The city streets were thick with traffic, but it was still a memorable ride. With deceptive speed, the slim, black Harley Davidson XLCR carved a swathe through the miles of slow-moving metal. The slightest twist of the throttle sent the torquey V twin stomping effortlessly forward. Everywhere the menacing Harley XLCR Café Racer went, its booming exhaust note cleared cars from its path, turned pedestrian’s heads and threatened to turn buildings to rubble.”

Despite such plaudits the bike was expensive and basically ‘too little too late’, hence the brief period of production.

This XLCR was built in late 1977 and registered in the USA 1st January 1978. It was imported by its current owner in 2012 and first registered in the UK on 14th January 2013. At some time in its life the bike has had a colour change from its original black to purple, and a chrome exhaust fitted in place of the original black one. There is some cosmetic damage to the bike but it runs very well and has an MOT until 1sr September 2015. The mileage is shown as 16,718 miles but this cannot be guaranteed.

This is a chance to buy a piece of Harley Davidson history that is rare in the USA but as rare as ‘hen’s teeth’ in Europe.
