THIS CAR HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN

A vitally important model for Porsche at a time when 911 sales were flagging, the 944 was launched in 1982 and proved an immediate sensation, press and public alike being bowled over by the brilliant handling, torquey engines and ‘hewn from solid’ build quality.

Initially it came with just one engine option, a 163bhp 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit that was essentially half of the magnificent V8 from the 928. Over the next few years four more engine options were offered, a 189bhp 2.7-litre 16v, a 220bhp Turbo, a 250bhp Turbo S and a normally aspirated 208bhp 3-litre.

This last engine is considered by many to be the best of the bunch, offering the reliability and fuel economy of the smaller-engined model but nearly as fast as the Turbo (0-60 in 5.9 secs and 150mph) and with bags of low down torque – great for quick getaways at the traffic lights Grand Prix! All three of the high performance models had improved brakes, suspension and aerodynamics that made them sensational driver's cars with fabulous performance, balance and handling – superior to a 911 in many respects.

Dating from the last year of production, this August 1991 S2 is a desirable ‘bridge spoiler’ model with the composite rear spoiler that replaced the old rubber lip spoiler in 1990. Properly looked after, these barrel chested 3-litre engines take huge mileages in their stride and this one has covered around 140,000 miles with a reassuring Porsche service history up to 100,000 miles and specialist servicing since. Fitted with a new cambelt in 2013, a new clutch and two new tyres, it is said to drive as an S2 should with an MOT until February 2016.

Looking mean and moody in black with a full grey leather interior, it looks mighty tempting at the sensible guide price suggested, the 944 being a model that is widely tipped for future greatness. Another one to buy now while you can still afford to…
