Maserati resurrected the legendary Ghibli name in 1992 with the release of the broodily handsome twin-turbo Ghibli II.

Beautifully understated but oozing subdued aggression, it was fitted with updated versions of the tried and tested Maserati Biturbo engines: a 2-litre V6 for the Italian and European markets and a 2.8-litre V6 for other countries, operated via a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic.

In 1994, the car was revised. A refreshed interior, new wheels, fully adjustable electronic suspension and ABS brakes were added. A full four-seater, the cabin was luxuriously trimmed in the finest Connolly leather with a burr elm dash and door cappings plus, of course, that famous gold clock in the centre of the dash.

In 2.8-litre form the Ghibli produced a fearsome 286bhp and 305lb/ft of torque, had a top speed of 155mph and could sprint to 60 in just 5.7 seconds with prodigious mid-range wallop. Production came to an end in 1997 and it was replaced by the 3200GT the following year.

This particular Ghibli was supplied new by Meridien Maserati in February 1995 and is a rare RHD Getrag 6-speed manual model, earlier cars making do with a 5-speed shift or, more commonly, a 4-speed automatic. It has covered some 93,500 miles with a good service history comprising 14 stamps to date, seven at Maserati main agents.

Kept as part of a private collection for the last ten years, it has been used on high days and holidays only during this time and much money has been lavished upon it by its enthusiast owner to keep it in good condition. This has included a rebuilt rear diff, full service and cambelt change in 2013, recent new tyres and refurbished wheels.

Said to drive as it should with intimidating performance (especially in the wet!), it comes with all its original handbooks in the original wallet, an original sales brochure, many old MOTs and service invoices and is due to be freshly MOTd before the sale.

Every true petrolhead should own a Maserati at least once in their life. So much more characterful than any German sports saloon, this gentleman's GT looks excellent value in what is the Centenary of this evocative Modenese brand. Keep this one in the smart condition you see today and its value can surely only go one way in future.

PS: The mileage on this car is now just over 94,000 as it has been in use since the catalogue description was written.
