One of the beauties of an MGB is that every conceivable spare part is readily available. After a production run of over 523,000, there are still more than 21,000 still registered with the DVLA making them one of the most enduringly popular sports cars ever made with a support network like no other.

This 1972 model is something a bit different. Bare-metal restored in the mid-1980s, it has been converted into what the vendor calls ‘Speedster’ specification. It’s certainly just the job for getting flies stuck in your teeth, sporting a pair of aero-screens in favour of a more conventional windscreen.

‘Speedster’ by name and ‘Speedster’ by nature thanks to its 138bhp Oselli-tuned 1,950cc B-series engine. Lightened and balanced, it has been uprated with a 715 camshaft and larger 1 ¾” valves and fitted with a smart cast alloy Oselli rockerbox cover. It breathes through a DCOE45 Weber (with K&N filter) on an alloy manifold and a long-branch tubular exhaust manifold connected to a sports system.

A competition clutch takes the drive through to the manual gearbox fitted with overdrive and a new clutch master and slave cylinder having been recently added. The font suspension has been polybushed and upgraded with 14” brake discs fitted to cope with the extra performance.

Hard to miss in lurid purple with its wire wheels and big chin-spoiler, this riot of a machine could be tamed by simply refitting the original hood and windscreen that are being sold with the car. A good file of history details its earlier rebuild and includes a sheaf of old MOTs, a workshop manual and an Oselli tuning book.

It has covered just 5,000 miles since its rebuild, with just 300 of these taking place over the last three years. It is MOTd until June 2015 and looks like a lot of fun.

AMENDMENT: This car is MOTd until June not September as stated in the printed catalogue.
