The Land Rover was a brilliant idea from the outset, filling a gap in the market identified by the civilian demand for decommissioned US army Jeeps, as well as using surplus aluminium left over from war-time production, steel being in short supply.

First shown in 1948, early models used a rather feeble 1.6-litre ioe engine which struggled with the unreasonable burdens these work horses were usually asked to carry. In 1952, rescue came in the form of the 1,997cc unit donated from the Rover 60, which made a world of difference. Over the years, the wheelbase grew in length making the Land Rover more versatile, although the cross-country ability of the short 80-inch was never really bettered.

According to the Heritage Certificated, this lovely Light Stone 80-inch was despatched from the factory on 18th March 1952 bound for Colliers of Birmingham. Stripped to its constituent parts in 2003, the chassis was carefully repaired and then taken to be hot-dip galvanised.

Photographs on file show the restoration, which included painting the galvanised chassis body colour, replacing the brakes, fuel tank, inner- and outer-wings, tailgate and doors, the car being reassembled with a new wiring loom. A new fuel tank and sender were also fitted and the engine was rebuilt with an unleaded head conversion. The vendor informs us that it has had modern indicators fitted along with an upgraded brake master cylinder.

Used sparingly ever since, there are a number of old MOTs and numerous invoices on file. The vendor also has a rare Power Take Off which he has never got round to fitting, which can be made available to the new owner by separate negotiation if desired.

Carefully restored and well presented, this Land Rover really stands out from the crowd in its attractive and unusual colour scheme. In lovely usable order, it is ready to show and go.
