Associated Motorcycles adopted the parallel-twin somewhat later than their rivals Triumph, BSA and Norton.

Announced in 1948, the AJS Model 20 differed from these old-stagers, incorporating a three bearing crankshaft in its new 500cc engine which was housed in a frame borrowed from AMC's heavyweight single cylinder range.

Capacity crept up in stages to 550cc, then 600cc before arriving at 646cc for the 1959 model year. The frame was also redesigned with duplex down tubes to cope with the extra power.

This increase in capacity led to a number of crankshaft issues, so for 1960 there was a change of material to nodular iron, engines fitted with these stronger crankshafts having an ‘X’ in the serial number. The AJS Model 31 was offered in standard and CSR sports trim with lightweight alloy mudguards.

The July 1961 registered AJS 31 offered here is said by the vendor to be in good running order and to have been well cared for. It is one of the later more desirable models with the stronger crank and is presented in CSR sports trim with lightweight mudguards. It retains its original Monmouthshire registration 36 BWO, old RF60 buff logbook as well as a current V5C.
