The MG Midget, spiritual successor to a whole generation of small sports cars from the famous Abingdon marque, came about because of the absorbtion of the Austin-Healey Motor Company into the BMC empire.

MG needed a stop gap to bolster sales before the MGB could be bought into production and so the recently launched Austin-Healey Sprite MkII was re-badged as an MG. Sold alongside the Austin-Healey Sprite, the new Midget was a better equipped de luxe version of the little Healey and was priced some £40 higher. It immediately caught on with MG enthusiasts in large numbers, the earlier cars having a lightness, charm and simplicity of line and mechanical straightforwardness that the later cars could never quite equal.

This 1965 MkII example, with the later 59bhp 1,098cc engine, has had just three previous owners from new and was purchased by the vendor through Brightwells in 2012. The 'Passport to Service' book shows that by 1968 it had covered 18,000 miles, while further records dating back to the '70s show its mileage had risen to just under 65,000 by 1978. The vendor believes the current mileage of 83,000 to be genuine with 17 MOTs showing a mileage accumulation of just 6,000 miles since 1993.

A large file of invoices shows that a new clutch was fitted 2,000 miles ago along with a new starter ring-gear. Attention to the brakes and new springs are also detailed in the file along with bills for regular mainentance and attention. With an MOT until February 2016, it is ready to be enjoyed this coming summer.

These small MGs are a revelation to drive, with light, sharp steering and remarkably sprightly and spirited performance. Economical to own and run, they still deliver the same driver appeal today as they did when they were new.
