After much wrangling, the Jaguar board of directors finally sanctioned an £80 million investment for a replacement for the XJ6 in 1981. By the time of launch in October 1986, the spend had exceeded £200 million, the company having undergone a revolution in the way it designed, developed and produced cars which was to stand them in good stead for the future.

The new XJ40 used a completely new architecture and managed to incorporate the latest in production engineering technology, but by 1995 was starting to look a little ‘square’ although had more than earnt its fine reputation for reliability and build quality. The new X300 arrived based on the same core structure, with more traditional styling front and rear – a reaction to the public comments upon the launch of its predecessor. In any event it certainly hit the spot, with strong sales, particularly in Jaguar’s important export markets.

This 1997 model has had five owners, the previous purchasing the car through a Volvo main dealer in 2008. By this time, it had covered 63,750 miles and provided excellent service, passing into the hands of the vendor in 2014.

It retains the original handbook and service history which includes 10 service stamps, the last at 82,000 miles in 2009. There are additional invoices for further service/MOT work in 2011 at 95,000 miles, 2012 at 108,000 miles and 2013, by which time it had covered 122,000 miles.

Yet more bills indicate that it spent its more recent existence in Germany, invoices from 2012 showing that new wheel bearings and an air flow meter were replaced while overseas. In 2013 it was given a professional respray by German based Autolackiererei in Wasserburg at a cost of over 3,000 Euros.

Since its return to the UK it has spent most of its time in professional dehumidified storage, its most recent MOT expiring while laid up in September 2014. The total mileage now reads a shade under 124,000 miles and this fine looking, well cared for X300 is offered at no reserve.
