It was back in 1970 that Ford introduced the Rallye Sport models – the RS range. Originally designed as a way of making limited numbers of homologation specials, it soon grew into a major marketing opportunity, and one that Ford grabbed with both hands.

By 1976, when the RS2000 MkII was launched, the term RS was understood to mean something a bit special. They were also a firm favourite of every ‘70s TV detective series, no doubt adding to their cult status. The recent surge in interest is possibly thanks to the continual repeats of The Professionals and The Sweeney on digital TV!

Based on a standard MkII two-door saloon shell, the car used the familiar 1,993cc Pinto engine driving the rear wheels. Using a twin-choke Weber 32/36 carb it produced 110bhp and was good for 110mph with the 0-60mph dash taking 8.9 seconds. Initially available as a single model alongside its slightly cheaper Mexico stablemate, Ford subsequently rationalised its model range and dropped the Mexico.

The RS2000 could then come in standard or ‘Custom’ form, as here. For the extra money the RS2000 Custom driver got a carpeted boot, 4-spoke alloys, a centre console, clock and pod , 'fishnet' Recaro seats and a black panel around the rear lights. Production ceased in July 1980 and according to DVLA records only 1,200 RS2000s of all types are still registered in the UK today.

One of the last examples made, this particular RS2000 Custom was first registered in September 1980 and has covered some 115,000 miles to date. Acquired by the vendor in January 2007 to join his private collection, it was already in good condition following an earlier restoration in 2005 when the engine and gearbox were rebuilt, but was further improved by the vendor shortly after acquisition.

Now said to be in “exceptionally clean and standard condition with no modifications and no signs of any previous accident damage”, it looks most impressive in Terracotta Orange with a retrimmed cream leather Recaro interior and new carpets. Said to “drive beautifully with no clonks or rattles” and due to have a fresh MOT in time for the sale, it also comes with a good history file showing that it has had a fortune spent on it over the years.

A desirable non-sunroof model, it is sure to be of interest to any Fast Ford collector and will no doubt prove a shrewd investment at the sensible guide price suggested given the way that values of this model have firmed in recent years.
